The national hockey league is a professional ice hockey league that was started on 26th November 1927. It consists of 30 teams, 23 from the United States and 7 teams from Canada. This league is home to the oldest professional sports trophy in the world, the Stanley cup, which is awarded to the winner of the season every year.
Here are some interesting facts about the NHL
1.There weren’t barriers around the hockey rink until a brawl broke out between players and the fans during an NHL game in 1979. The league then put plexiglass barriers in all the NHL rinks so the players and fans could not brawl
2.The hockey pucks that are used in the NHL matches are kept inside an ice box to chill, this is done so the hockey puck doesn’t bounce during the games.
3.In 1993 there was a player sold to the Detroit Red wings for 1$, his name was Kris Draper. He went on to win 4 Stanley cups with Detroit.
4.The first hockey pucks were frozen cow dung pieces, now they are made of vulcanized rubber. It is 1-inch-thick and weighs 6 ounces.
5.If both the NHL goalies are injured, the team can choose literally any person to suit up and play as the goalie, this includes fans.
